Tanzania Alert: New Law Allows Anonymous Witnesses in Tundu Lissu Case

⚖️ Tanzania Alert: Anonymous Witnesses Allowed in Tundu Lissu Case

The Government of Tanzania has amended its laws to allow witnesses in the Tundu Lissu treason case to conceal their identities by masking their faces during testimony.

This change could severely undermine the fairness of the trial, as the ability to see and evaluate a witness’s demeanor is essential to assessing their credibility. This development comes as Lissu faces a politically charged treason charge—punishable by death.

Tundu Lissu, a key opposition leader and survivor of a past assassination attempt, has voiced strong opposition to this move, calling it a tool of political repression under President Samia Suluhu’s administration.

The new rule not only silences dissent but also erodes the fundamental right to a fair and open trial.

🟢 Our Demands:

  • 🔓 The Tanzanian Judiciary must reject anonymous testimony in all politically sensitive trials.
  • 🌍 The African Union and East African Community must intervene to protect fair trial rights regionally.
  • 🗣️ Civil society and legal observers must monitor this case to ensure transparency and accountability.

Justice must not wear a mask.
The world is watching Tanzania. The right to face your accuser is not optional—it is constitutional.
