25 Years On: Survivors of Kisangani Wars Still Denied Justice and Dignity

“We are alive, but forgotten.” — Survivor of the 2000 Kisangani Six-Day War
📌 Overview
This year marks 25 years since the Kisangani Wars, brutal battles between Rwandan and Ugandan forces fought on Congolese soil between 1999 and 2000. The Six-Day War of June 2000 alone left over 1,000 civilians dead and thousands injured. Yet to this day, survivors live without reparations, recognition, or justice.
❌ No Reparations. No Apologies. No Accountability.
- 2005: ICJ ruled Uganda liable for armed aggression in DRC
- 2022: Uganda agreed to pay $325 million over 5 years
- 🎯 Survivors say none of that has reached them
💬 Testimonies of Survivors
“We saw our families killed, our homes shelled, and our lives shattered. But no one remembers us — not even our own government.”
— Mama Odette, 64
“Our bodies were broken. Our dignity stripped. Twenty-five years is too long to wait for justice.”
— Patrick, former teacher turned street vendor
