Background: A Dangerous Pattern
East Africa faces an alarming rise in cross-border abductions and unlawful detention of human rights defenders and activists. These violations threaten fundamental freedoms and the democratic fabric of the region.
Recent Cases of Concern
Mwabili Mwagodi, a Kenyan activist, disappeared mysteriously in July 2025 while in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Reports indicate he remains in custody without formal charges or legal access.
In May 2025, two prominent activists — Agather Atuhaire, a Ugandan journalist and human rights defender, and Boniface Mwangi, a Kenyan anti-corruption activist — were abducted by Tanzanian authorities. Both were subjected to incommunicado detention, physical and sexual torture, and forcibly expelled across borders. These cases have been documented by the Resurgence Network for Human Rights.
Violations at Play
The arbitrary arrests, torture, and enforced disappearances breach constitutional protections and international human rights treaties, including rights to liberty, fair trial, and freedom from torture.
Our Position
- Immediate disclosure of Mwabili Mwagodi’s whereabouts
- Unrestricted access to legal counsel for all detainees
- Transparent public explanation for arrests and detention conditions
- Urgent release unless formally charged with due process
- Full investigation and accountability for abuses committed
